We plan to spend 7 to 8 nights in Swiss keeping 2 bases for the trip

    Base 1- Geneva

Day 2 09.08 Full day Geneva

Day 3 10.08 Geneva – Lausanne, Montreux, Vevey and back to Geneva

Day 4 Geneva- Zermatt -Matterhorn back to base in Geneva

    Base 2 – Lucerne

Day 5- Check out from Geneva to Lucerne – Mt Titlis/Mt Pilatus on same day and back to Lucerne

Day 6 – Lucerne -Interlaken-Jungfrau back to Lucerne

Day 7- Lucerne- Bern full day and back to Lucerne

Day 8 – Lucerne to Zurich , Rhine Falls and flight back .

    Can you please advise if

    1. If this is a doable itinerary

    2. Is there any place which should be added or deleted from the itinerary

    3. Is there any Golden Pass route that can be included in this itinerary

    4. On Day 6 after returning from Jungfrau is it still possible to go around Interlaken and Grindelwald before returning to Lucerne

    Thanks for your inputs

Hi Chandni and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Nice to hear you’re coming to Switzerland.

Your itinerary is quite ambitious, especially the trips you plan from Lucerne. Is there a chance for you to add a night or two in the Interlaken area?!
This would allow you to travel Geneva – Montreux – Interlaken (visit Jungfraujoch and Bern from here)- Lucerne – Zurich. Just an idea.

To find out about travelling times and connections for either itinerary the timetable below will be of great help.

Montreux – Interlaken – Lucerne IS the Golden Pass line. Check for details here:

    Hi Steph

Thank you so much to take out time to reply to me. U mean to say that I should add on one more base as Interlaken or change my Geneva base to Interlaken.I checked the time that it takes to commute and found that Bern almost takes the same time from Lucerne and Interlaken as well. Correct me if wrong please

DO you think Zermatt and Matterhorn is better to do from Geneva or Lucerne? Also can this be done in day and we can be back at our base

I know that Jungfrau from Lucerne can be time taking and request you to advise how to cover it the best in case we don’t have a option to include Interlaken stay

Also wanted to know if Interlaken and Grindelwald need a separate day ? or can be combined on the same day we visit Jungfrau

    Thanks for your advise

DO you think Zermatt and Matterhorn is better to do from Geneva or Lucerne?

There is not much difference in travel time Geneva to Zermatt versus Luzern to Zermatt so you could conceivable fit in a look at the Matterhorn on your way from Geneva to Luzern (or Interlaken) and save having to backtrack all the way to Geneva.

    Hi dear

Thank you for your reply. In order to go to the Matterhorn mountains we will still need to come to Zermatt right? Also heard Lucerne to Zermatt has a Golden pass. Can you please advise if that would be possible to take

Yes, the Matterhorn is near Zermatt. From Zermatt you can take a train to Gornergrat. That’s as close as you can get to the Matterhorn.

The Golden Pass route (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) runs between Montreux and Luzern. If you are heading to Luzern from Zermatt you would join the route at Spiez.

Have you considered staying at Montreux, perhaps, instead of Geneva? Or maybe you have some specific things you want to see in Geneva.

    Hi Dear

We will be coming from Paris to Geneva – Can you please advise why you recommend Montreux instead of Geneva so that I can understand the reason. I would like to see the Lake Geneva and the UN In Geneva. Also are there fast trains from Paris to Montreux as well

In case we stay in Montreux instead of Geneva are there any hotels you recommend also will it be cheaper then Geneva?

The day when we arrive Lucerne from Geneva after checking in the hotel can we still manage to do Mt Titlis the same day

Also is Lugano from Lucerne doable and is Lugano worth a visit

I suggested Montreux as your current plan has a lot of going backwards and forward to Geneva. And I like Montreux. You get to Montreux from Paris by first arriving at Geneva.

Can you do Titlis on the same day you arrive from Luzern? That’s why you need to check the timetables to work out what’s feasible. Depends what route you take from Geneva to Luzern.

Lugano is not worth considering on this trip. Maybe next time? You can’t see all of Switzerland in 8 days unless you intend to spend all 8 days in train seats.

    Dear All

Can you please give me more suggestions on how ca I make my Itenary better.

Do you think Geneva and Lucerne are not the right base for what we want to travel or should we change one of the bases. Adding a 3rd base is not what we want to do as we might be spending a lot of time in checking in and checking out of the hotels.

    looking forward for more recommendations

    Thanks

    Hello Chandni,

Thanks for providing that clear statement of wanting only two bases.

To visit the places you mention, your initial idea is perfect, whereas I would also consider staying in Montreux rather than Geneva and visiting Geneva in the time you’re on Lake Geneva.

But the final decision is up to you.

Sometimes too much input can also cause confusion, your initial plan is fine so you can stick to it, no worries! 🙂

For suggestions about Hotels in both Montreux and Geneva use below links:

Thanks Steph for your inputs and I will surely consider Montreux as a option instead of Geneva

One more question that I wanted to ask will it make sense if we keep one base as Lucerne and change the other to Jungfrau region like Lauterbrunnen? will it help to save some travel time instead.

    Thanks

    Hi Chandni,

I recommend to work with the timetable link in Steph’s first post. Please read the instructions first, and you’ll then be able to find detailed travel times to all places in Switzerland.

The Jungfrau region is wonderful too. You can find details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion.
