9 days Lugano, Lucerne, Mürren: which pass?

Can someone please offer some advice about the best pass (or combination of passes)? I care more about convenience than I do which pass saves me the most money (to a certain extent anyway). We start our travels from Lugano to Luzern where we will stay 4 nights and anticipate train trips on at least 3 of my 4 days there. On day 5 we leave for Murren where we spend another 4 nights. I’m sure we will be taking a train every day while there to visit the nearby mountains. On day 9 we leave for Stresa Italy.

My initial thought was the 8 day Swiss Travel pass and then just buy the Murren to Stresa leg separately. I could also do a combo Swiss travel pass for 4 days (and have to separately purchase either the Lugano to Luzern or Luzern to Murren trip) and the BO pass for 4 days.

For the experienced travelers here and without worrying about which pass saves an extra few dollars what would you choose?

Many thanks to the great folks at myswissalps.

    Brian E.

    Hi Brian E.!

Both of your options would work out well in terms of convenience. Which one ends up being most convenient, depends on the number of cable cars and mountain trains you plan to use while staying in Mürren. If you’ll be doing many of such trips, a Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland could be easier as it offers free instead of discounted traveling for some mountain trips. You can compare validity through https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity and https://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity.

If you’d start your 4-day Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland validity on day 5, your journey from Lucerne to Mürren would be fully covered, so there would be no need to get an additional ticket for that transfer.

The Swiss Travel Pass would very easy to use as well. You may need to buy additional discounted tickets for some more mountain routes in the Jungfrau region, but again, that depends on your exact plans.

In both scenarios you would need an additional ticket for your transfer to Italy on day 9. For the Swiss leg, that could be a normal ticket from Mürren to Domodossola (https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland, or a Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass). Unless, and here comes a 3rd option, you get a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass! That may sound strange, but the price difference between the 15-day and 8-day variant is only CHF 40: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price. A normal ticket and even the cheapest possible Saver Day Pass would cost more than that.

For your additional ticket Domodossola-Stresa, please see https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

I hope this helps you decide!

Thanks Arno, that is helpful. I think the 15 pass may be the way to go.
