Hi everyone! I’m already starting to plan and prepare our 10-day itinerary trip to Switzerland next year, May 2023. We’re so excited as this is our first time visiting Switzerland (my dream). Our in and out airport is Zurich. I provided below a tentative and brief itinerary of our trip.

We would like to do a day trip to Lake Como. Could you please help us on how to fit Lake Como into our Switzerland trip?

Any suggestions on how I can make this itinerary better and feasible would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Day 1: Arrive in Zurich Airport at 8:30 AM. Home Base – Grindelwald

    Day 2: Lauterbrunnen and Murren

Day 3: Boat tour Lake Brienz

Day 4: Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, Ice Palace, Cliff Walk

Day 5: Stroll around Zermatt town. Home Base – Zermatt

Day 6: Take the cable car ride to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Day 7: Visit Mount Pilatus. Home Base – Zurich

Day 8: Visit Maison Cailler and Cheese Factory

Day 9: maybe joined an organized tour to Lake Como???

Day 10: Back to Zurich to fly home.

    Thanks so much,

    Maria Bonifacio

Hi Maria Bonifacio and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

Your itinerary looks good for me, it is doable.

Gruyères (cheese factory) is a bit further from Zurich, it takes around 2,5 hrs by train to get there. From there it takes an other 30 mins to get the Broc (Maison Cailler). It is still doable, just note the traveling times.

Visiting Lake Como from Zurich is also a bit further, at least 2,5 hrs. Is there any reason why you would like to visit that lake in Italy? Or can I recommend other wonderful lakes in Switzerland?

As you are planning to travel to Italy too: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

Also, make sure to have a rail pass, which will save you money. As you are traveling in the whole of Switzerland, I recommend the Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass.

    Take care,

    Ildiko

    Hi lIdiko,

Thank you so much for your quick response. I like the idea of going to another beautiful lake in Switzerland. If you could recommend something I would appreciate it. Also, is there another Chocolate or Cheese factory that is closer?

I will be getting the Swiss Travel Pass once I finalize my itinerary and book our flights and hotels. How far in advance should I buy the rail pass?

Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi Maria,

A list of chocolate factories can be found here: http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/culinary/chocolate. Lindt between Zurich and Lucerne is a good one.

The Emmentaler cheese factory is closer to Zurich: emmentaler-schaukaeserei.ch/en/discover/Kings-Way-Tour.php

If you like cheese, make sure to try a cheese fondue, my favourite is the one made from half Gruyere and half of Vacherin 🙂

You can buy your rail pass at any time online or even already in Switzerland. I like to sort out these kinds of things before my arrival, so I can save time and do not have to wait in line at the train station. You can buy your Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price

Lake Lucerne is wonderful, you’ll be close to it while you are visiting Pilatus. But that lake is really worth a day. See the activity tips: http://www.myswissalps.com/lakelucerne/activities.

If you would like to experience the Italian part of Switzerland, I recommend Lake Maggiore. It is a bit closer than Lake Como.
