Hi All,

I will be in Switzerland for 7 days in the last week of May and of those 3 will be in the Interlaken-Grindelwald area. I am staying all 3 days in Grindelwald.

If I visit the Aare Gorge Canyon will it leave time to visit any other place?

Is the Canyon open or worth visiting in May? I mean is water is frozen or any other key things to note?

How is the connectivity from Grindelwald to the Canyon?

The Aareschlucht is well worth a visit. It is ‘underground’ so doesn’t freeze

It is not far from the Interlaken area (90 mins by train) so easy to do that and something else in one day

Grindelwald – Interlaken Ost (BOB railway train blue and yellow)

Interlaken Ost – Meiringen (ZB railway train red and white)

Meiringen – Aareschlucht (MIB railway single coach train)

@1960man – thanks for responding. I was hoping for a direct route from Grindelwald to Meiringen, rather than the winding route via Interlaken. Guess this is the only choice 🙂

I had one boat trip planned on either of the two lakes. So now I can do the Brienz boat cruize enroute to Aareschlucht. What do you think?

The ‘winding’ route via Interlaken is the direct route! I’m afraid this is the Swiss Alps, by definition an area of high mountains. If there is no ancient Pass route, modern road or railway tunnel on the ‘direct’ aka ‘as the crow flies’ ‘ route then you will always have to travel more circuitously…

There is a bus on the ‘direct route’ via Gross Scheidegg but the road that way is narrow and slow, which is why the ‘winding’ route on fast trains via Interlaken is actually quicker

You could easily combine a Brienzersee boat trip with a trip to Meiringen

I am considering clubbing Harder Kulm before doing the Brienzersee boat ride to Meiringen/Aareschlucht.

Considering the weather(we will do this on 27th May) will it be better to visit Harder Kulm at the start, or after returning from Meiringen?

Also, I understand this much will be doable in one day?

Yes, I’d say this is doable. Planning for the weather can only be done 1 to 2 days in advance, max. Forecasts for a date two weeks from now are still pretty much random.

I see.

If the weather is clear, I would probably do Harder Kulm after returning from Meiringen. I’ve heard good reviews about the sunset view from up there. Will it be too much to expect in the May though?

For sure it will also be worth visiting in May and you can just decide after your Meiringen trip if you still have enough energy.
