Hello, We are a group of 5 adults traveling with five kids ranging from 9 year old to 16 year old. We have just started planning for our trip to Switzerland starting from 12 December to 20 December. We are not much of a skier so it’s mainly to view the sights and some snow time for the kids up in the mountain. This is our first time in Switzerland.

Before continuing with our planning, we would like to know the feasibility or any improvement that can be made to our itinerary as follow:

12 Dec – arriving in Zurich at 6.15 am. Take train from airport to Chur to board the Glacier Express to Zermatt.

13 Dec – Spend the day in Zermatt (visiting Gornergrat, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise)

14 Dec – Depart Zermatt for Montreux (Visit the christmas market and the town)

15 Dec – Depart Montreux for Lauterbrunnen (Is Lauterbrunnen a good base to explore the Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald in December?)

    16 Dec – Lauterbrunnen

17 Dec – Depart Lauterbrunnen for Zurich

18 Dec – Zurich (explore Zurich or take trips out from Zurich)

19 Dec – Zurich (explore Zurich or take trips out from Zurich)

    20 Dec – Depart Zurich

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

    Thank you.

Hello Boonkhim and Welcome to MySwiss Alps

The Glacier Express does not operate after 13 October until 15 December. You can see the timetable at http://www.glacierexpress.ch/ en/travel-planning/timetables/. You can follow the same route on regular trains. If you really want to experience the Glacier Express then maybe reverse your direction of travel so you end up returning to Zurich from Zermatt via Chur?

Otherwise your plan looks feasible. Perhaps have another day on Lauterbrunnen and one less in Zurich.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel, find fares* and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. *SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, mobile app allows you to nominate full or half-fare and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare.

You should also read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.

    Hello Boonkhim,

Yes, your plan looks nicely paced and absolutely do-able. Depending on what you’re interested you might want to look into Rockoysters idea regarding Lauterbrunnen and Zurich, find input in below links:

Rockoyster and Steph, thank you for your replies. We will definitely relook at our itinerary again.

We were planning to take a day trip to Lucerne from Zurich on one of the days and take the other day to explore Zurich.

Otherwise, we could give Montreux a miss this round and focus on Zermatt, Lauterbrunnen and Zurich. Would that be a better idea?

    Hi BoonKhim,

It really depends on your preferences, and you can’t go wrong with any of those places. In general I recommend to spend more time in less places, instead of rushing from place to place. Apart from Steph’s links, these are useful for you as well I think:
