    Hello,

I’m planning a solo 6-month trip to to Europe later this year, and am thinking about spending almost a month in Lauterbrunnen in October.

I wanted to know if it’s easy to travel to nearby towns for day trips. And if the weather will be too cold for hiking in October? Any other general advice?

    thank you!

Hi Noelle and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Yes, using the Swiss train system is easy and simple. Lauterbrunnen has good connections around the Jungfrau region (http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion) as well as out to Interlaken to connect to other regions of Switzerland if you decide to (http://www.myswissalps.com/re gions).

You can check how long it takes to get to different towns and mountains via trains, buses, boats or cable cars, using the Swiss railways timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

For a month of travel around Switzerland you’ll want to get a rail pass to help save costs. A Swiss Half Fare Card is certainly a good bet: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard and perhaps a local regional card like the Jungfrau Travel Pass as well: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrautravelpass (valid until Oct.21).

Early October can be a great time to hike in the mountains, but I’d want to be done my mid-October. It will start to get cold and some snow will start at higher elevation hikes – so earlier is better: http://www.myswissalps.com/be sttimetovisit

Lauterbrunnen is in a deep valley – not the best place to stay in October.

I suggest you think about staying in the foothills of the Alps or even in the ‘Mittelland’ aka Swiss Plateau – or even in a city like Bern itself. It is easy to travel for day trips to all parts of the country if you base yourself in the centre of Switzerland*.

And don’t forget there is hiking available all over the country on the famous ‘Wanderweg’ network (Switzerland is one of the few countries in the world where you get ‘rural’ walking path signs adjacent to factories and industrial parks!) In fact hiking in the lower altitude areas is very rewarding as you see the ‘real Switzerland’

    * For example Bern – Lauterbrunnen is only 1 hour 20 minutes on the train

Thank you for your reply. Can you clarify what the issue is with being in a deep valley? Do you mean that it will be too cold?

I think the negatives in a deep valley in October is lack of sun. You may find the views from Wengen (above Lauterbrunnen) a bit more special.
