Planning our September trip to Switzerland…10 nights divided between St. Moritz, Zermatt, Wengen and Zurich. My son would like to try an alpine coaster and I’d love to combine it with a hike or summit visit day during our stay in Wengen. Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks!

Hi MIgal and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

I know one at Pfingsteg near Grindelwald: http://www.myswissalps.com/pfingstegg

This topic also lists several options: http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/best-summer-alpine-coasters-in-bernese-oberland.

    Hi Mlgal.

Yep, the Pfingstegg Rodelbahn is a hoot! If you want to do a combined hike/ride you could take the train from Wengen over Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald, then take the cable car to Pfingstegg and walk to the Berghaus Bäregg for lunch and views of the Schreckhorn and the Lower Grindelwald Glacier (what’s left of it. Check it out on Google Maps), then walk back to Pfingstegg for the coaster ride before catching the cable car (or walk) back to Grindelwald. I’d suggest leaving early to make the most of the day.

    Have Fun!

    Hi MIgal,

I can recommend the Grindelwald First – Bachalpsee hike. It is an easy one but still nice: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/bachsee.

    Hi Guys.

I agree with Ildiko that the First (pronounced Fearsht) -Bachalpsee trip is worthwhile. It’s a very easy walk, but I wouldn’t call it a hike. It’s very well known and attracts lots of tourists who are trying to capture that Insta Moment, so you won’t be short of company. The plus side is the spectacular views of the mountains across the valley as well as a choice of rides at First like the Flyer, Trikes and Trotti bikes.

If you want to ride a coaster and combine it with a true mountain experience then I’d still recommend the Pfingstegg excursion. The walk to the Berghaus Bäregg is more of a hike that takes you into the heart of the mountains, not away like at First and will be less crowded.

Sorry if this confuses things. Either choice will make for a memorable experience.

    Have fun!

    Alan
