Hi I am a newbie, live in Australia, and we are booked in Amsterdam from 1st December, would like to catch the train from Amsterdam to Zurich via Koblenz. Then catch the Bernina Express to St Maritz. From St Maritz across to Slovenia Ljibuana.

Does the trains run in December through the Alps? Does anyone have a itinerary idea that I could see please? We are spending Christmas in Ljibuana, so would 20 days be enough time to travel from Amsterdam to Ljibuana?

I thank anyone in advance for any help given.

20 days is certainly more than adequate to get from Amsterdam to Ljibuana.

A quick look at Google Maps shows you can go from St Moritz to Ljibuana in just under 12 hours.

The Bernina Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress) timetable beyond 8 December won’t be out until October but it is unlikely to change much from this year. See (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress) and scroll down for timetable. Note the Bernina Express from Chur does not go to St Moritz. You have to change trains at Pontresina to get there.

You can take regular trains from Zurich to Chur and then to St Moritz which follow the same route as the Bernina Express.

The Bernina Express runs between Chur and Tirano. One way of reaching Ljibuana is via Milan and Venice so you might want to look at including the full Bernina Express route in your itinerary. From Tirano you can catch and Italian train to Milan and go from there.
