    Hi all,

Firstly, this is a brilliant site and thanks to the creator of this site! Love the planning section/tools etc!

I have two queries today – one is about accommodation and the other itinerary. Both are inter-related, hence posting in this particular forum. Hope you can help!

We are a family of 4 adults, 1 child travelling to Swiss from 21st Aug to 26th Aug and looking for a self catering, decent accomodation with easy access to train stations and public transport. My budget is around £200 a night. I’m seeking recommendations of an ideal location to stay that would suit the above needs. Please also note that our trip is likely to be a slow paced, scenic ride trip. We are keen to cover all the major mountain passes/villages etc so an accommodation that matches these requirements is what Im looking for.

We are not keen to shift from one place to other as we feel we loose valuable time.

I would also really appreciate if you can suggest an itinerary on this basis. We are doing Euro tour, so will be travelling from Paris on the 21st.

Look forward to hearing your expert views!

    Many thanks!

If you have six days try not to organise an endurance test.

Best pick a base and go from there. Consider a regional pass depending on what you want to do.

What about one of the lesser known places especially if it is a railway junction where you can radiate from?

Perhaps you should be clearer on exactly what you want to do in the six days and seek further information from this site. All the resources you need should be here or on links therefrom.

Almost every Swiss rail line or transport route in scenic in one form or another so you don’t need to restrict yourself to the well known tourist services.

There can be more of an atmosphere on regular regional services.

It all depends on what you really want to achieve in your six days.

Hi Sindhusirsi and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I think you’ll have more luck with replies in another forum so I will move you. 🙂

I would look at a town in the Jungfrau region (https://www.myswissalp s.com/jungfrauregion) like Lauterbrunnen, which has good rail connections and is situated in a lovely setting. Interlaken is a bigger town that could suit you as well but not as picturesque.

Another popular option is Lucerne: https://www.myswissalp s.com/lucerne

All links above have details on what to do and where to stay for you to read through.

Be prepared to have trouble trying to book so last minute in August though – it is peak tourist season and very busy!

We don’t create itineraries here, but as Gunzel notes, you should be able to find everything you need by searching the website – however please do ask more questions here as needed!

It would be best to look at a rail pass for your trip to save money. Read through this page to help with the selection process: https://www.myswissalp s.com/train/ticketspas ses/practical/choosera ilpass

and use the Swiss railways timetable here to plan your trips around the country by train, bus, boat or cable car. https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable

Thanks for the suggestion. I have managed to book an accommodation in the village of Salavaux Post.

Considering we will be travelling from Paris by train, please can you suggest whether buying a swiss travel pass will cover my train journey from Paris to Salavaux Post or do I need to buy individual tickets? Also, which travel pass is more suitable given the itinerary below. Please note, we will have a car from day 4 onwards. Therefore, is it still necessary to have a train pass or should we continue to buy tickets as we go. I would like to keep the expenses to a minimum, so kindly suggest a more frugal option.

As mentioned in my earlier post, I would like to undertake scenic train journeys whilst here, so I am considering the following itinerary. Any suggestions and recommendations will be greatly appreciated

    Number of passengers – 4 (3 adults, 1 child)

Day 1 – Journey from Paris to Salavaux Post

Day 2 – Day trip to Berne

    Day 3 – Glacier express

    Day 4 – Interlaken area

    Day 5 – Zermatt area

Day 6 – Depart to Rome by flight

    Hi Sindhusirsi,

You’ll need to buy a ticket from France the Swiss border (Basel or Geneva). http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/france

I would suggest buying a Swiss Half Fare Card for the first few days and then for mountain trips after you have a car. http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard

Have you looked into how to complete the Glacier Express on day 3? Are you in Salavaux all nights in Switzerland? http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable //http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress

Thanks Lucas. Yes, we are in the same place for all nights.

Would you suggest any changes to the itinerary above? I have seen your link to the various scenic train rides. However, I’m a bit unclear whether they can each be done in one day or would need longer. Can you please advice.

    Thanks!

The only train that could work as a day trip would be the Golden Pass route.

You could make a round-trip by going straight to Montreux (or as straight/direct as possible) and then following the Golden Pass all the way back to Lucerne and then home. It will be a long day.

So day 3 could be the Golden Pass and Day 4 I’d go further into the Jungfrau region to explore (not just Interlaken). http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion

Read about my recent day trip to the Jungfrau region here: http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/jungfrau-region-as-a-day-trip-from-zurich
