Hi, we will be arriving in Zurich the 3rd week of September at 8am. We would like to spend a day hiking in the Swiss Alps and then catch the Bernina Express to Torino Italy. We can spend 1 or 2 nights in Switzerland depending on recommendations. We would like suggestions on a reasonably priced town for accommodations, from everything I am reading it sounds like Switzerland is very expensive. Question 1, should we rent a car in Zurich and drive to town you are going to suggest or catch a train and if so, what train? Question 2, should we settle in the town you are suggesting and spend the night, get up and go for hike in the morning and catch Bernina Express by around 2pm to Torino or is that too much for one day? We are a active middle aged couple. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Hi LoveTravelx2 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

If you are focused on the bernina Express (departure from Chur) then you will want to stay nearby to Chur. Perhaps Davos or St. Moritz but both can get pricey. Another option would be St. Gallen to explore the Appenzell region.

Either way you’ll want 1 full day for sure before catching the Bernina Express the next day.
