Me and my wife booked a trip to Switzerland for Dec 2-6 2019. We'll be landing on Basel airport at 1030 am. Planning to explore lucern and jungfrau region but cant decide if we'll get the swiss travel pass or half pass.

Here is our itinerary so far

Day 1 city tour of Basel and stay overnight
Day 2 travel to lucern: see mt. rigi then travel to lauterbrunnen
Day 3 explore/ hike lauterbrunnen, wengen, murren and grindelwald
Day 4 go to interlaken for paragliding
Day 5 return to basel for flight

*We wont go to jungfraufroch as we want to to the paragliding

Did some reseach and find out schilthorn and harder kulm is closed during our visit. Is it worth it if we get the swiss pass or just get the half pass?

Is it safe/managable to hike during that time of the year? Can you suggest a nice hiking trail?

Can you offer other suggestions to improve our trip?

Thanks so much!

Hi Erikcargile,

Welcome to MySwissAlps!

A quick look at your itinerary, I think a Swiss Half Fare card would be a good fit for you and your wife. But to be sure, you can download the spreadsheet and do your own calculation. The step-by-step guide is outlined below.

Regarding hiking in the mountains, most of the hiking trails would be inaccessible in early December due to most cable cars and mountain railways not operating. I suggest you stick to the valleys and can recommend at least 2 trails that is definitely safe and easy :) Please check the links below. As an alternative I would also consider exploring the numerous lovely towns and villages in the area such as Wengen, Grindelwald, Mürren and Lauterbrunnen. And you might want to consider making excursions to Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before you start your hike

Thanks Anna!

The half fare card seems to be the best option for us. What kind of weather do we expect in early december? Will it be snowy? We're not into winter sports and just like to see nature and explore :)

Hi Ericcargile,

As for inhabited areas: there can be snow in early December, but also no snow at all, which is more likely. Anything is possible: rain, sun, probably chilly weather but it can be relatively mild as well. If winter sports are possible it will only be in the highest resorts. Please see:
