    Hello friend

We will be coming from Interlaken and staying in Zermatt for 1 night for an early morning journey to Matterhorn, then we will be taking train back to Zurich.

From Zermatt to Zurich, it takes about 3 hrs. by train so we are thinking of taking the train in the evening , so we won’t waste 3 hrs. on the train

Do you have any suggestion of attraction we could do after the Matterhorn, or any nearby city, village not far from Zermatt, before we taking train in the evening ?

PS. We have half fare card but no Swiss pass, and our trip is in 1st week of October, how is the weather around that period ?

Thank you so much for suggestion

    Cece

    Hi Cece,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

What are your plans in Zermatt? Are you planning to take the cogwheel train up to Gornergrat? Aside from Gornergrat, you can also do excursion to Sunnegga and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Also Zermatt is quite small but compact and you can enjoy a nice stroll around the village. You can find other activities to do in Zermatt here: http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt/activities

Alternatively, you can take an early connection to Zurich and make a stop in one of the stations along the way. Bern is a lovely city to explore.

October is generally the start of the autumn season so the weather will be mild and maybe chilly at night. You can find the seasonal weather description here to give you an idea of how to plan and pack for your trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

    Regards,

    Anna

    hi anna

Thank you very much for your reply,

Aside from Gronergrat, we plan to do some walk from Rothenbodern to Rifflesee, or may be the whole 5 lakes hike.

But Sunnegga as you suggested is also interested. thank you once again !

Ps. Just one more question, can Swiss half fare card (120 CHF) discount 50% to the Gornergrat train and the Glacier paradise route as well ? We do not have the swiss pass, but we are thinking to buy Swiss half fare card (120 CHF) ** not the traveler half fare card**

    Have a great day

A short stay in Zermatt risks poor weather blocking good views of the Matterhorn. Just stay in Zermatt before leaving for Zurich

    Hi Cece,

Yes, if you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, you get a 50% discount on the routes to Gornergat and Klein Matterhorn as well. See the details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/validity.

    Hi Ildiko

Thank you ! now we rest assure that we won’t purchase the wrong type, as the Swiss half fare and the 1/2 fare travel card can be confused because of the name and in the app of SBB only showing the 1/2 fare travel card so we are not 100 % sure

    Have a great day

    Hi Cece,

there is the Swiss Half Fare Card – usually for tourists: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard.

And there is the Half-Fare travelcard, that is more for residents. You can read about the difference here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/details.

When you are purchasing tickets via SBB or SBB mobile app, it doesn’t matter which card/pass you have, you just select that you have the 50% discount for your route. You can find the validity map of the Swiss Half Fare Card here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/validity.

Please let me know if you have further questions,

    Ildiko
