Titlis, Jungfraujoch in bad weather in October

We arrive in Lucerne from Venice by train on the 21st and have 3 nights in Lucerne,2 in Interlaken and 1 in Basel.

Our itinerary is fairly simple. That is, town sightseeing and visits to Titlis and Rigi in Lucerne, Jungfrau and Lake Thun in Interlaken and sightseeing in Basel city. Back ups are the Aviation Museum and Bern.

I have promised my wife some access to a snow area in Europe and hence our visits to Titlis and Jungfrau. So regardless of weather we will go to at least one the mountains. Noting I am well aware from past experience on other mountains that there will be no views but I keep my promises regardless..

My question is are the facilities open at the top of mountains when the weather is bad or do they closedown some of the facilities due to lack of visitors. Also which mountain would be the best to visit based on facilities in the event of poor weather for the 6 days.

I am not looking forward to the cable car ride to Titlis due to some near lifelong phobia issues. Can you kindly tell the approximate time you are in the actual cable car so I can mentally prepare myself.

I have read all forum posts for over a year now and used all the web pages to plan our trip. The facility has been a great help and the comments by moderators and users has helped me immensely in planning the trip.

For example and after doing the spreadsheet, I decided to purchase a 4 day swiss pass despite the half fare pass being considerably cheaper. The basis of my decision was the convenience factor which has been mentioned many times on the forum. Much better for a worrier like me to pay a little extra and not have stress out over purchasing tickets.

So my thanks to all for the help.

If you are going to Titlis, the whole journey from the base station to the summit takes approximately 20 minutes

    Hi tellybrian –

<<“Back ups are the Aviation Museum and Bern.”>>

I know where Bern is, but do not know where the Aviation Museum is. I’d love to visit it. Please help.

    Hi Slowpoke

I appreciate that there are many forms of transport in this world and that this site specialises in the train as a form of transport. I however spent over 20 years in the Australian Air Force so through word association a transport museum equals a aviation museum and the other forms of transport are secondary!!!!!!!!

The last train I was on was in 1988 and it was on the famous Ghan train from Adelaide to Alice Springs in Australia’s Northern Territory. So others forms of transport are not clearly stored in my mind.

It is possible that after this trip with the many train rides we will have, I may think through word association that the Transport Museum is a Train Museum and not an Aviation Museum.

Thank you for your response re facilities on the mountain tops.

    G’Day Telly –

With the long distances involved, air travel tends to be a necessary first resort here in the USA, too. Indeed, I think that the famous rail journey you mention takes days, doesn’t it?

You will find the Swiss rail network an interesting and pleasing contrast. It is not so much this site as Switzerland itself that specializes ( USA spelling )in rail travel. There are token examples of aircraft and automobiles there, but it really is a train museum.

If you visit that museum, you will see some interesting examples of the early high powered alpine locomotives, which were comparable in horsepower to the largest US locomotives. All electric. There was a horsepower race of sorts in those days. There is a lot of information about the trans-Alpine rail projects, too.
