    Hi –

My 15 y/o daughter and I will be in Bern on June 28, and need to be in Venice by Saturday, June 30th. Any suggestions for transportation and where to stop for the two nights? We’d like part of the trip to be by one of the scenic trains, and would like for towns that we stop over in to have easy access to transfers. We are not the type to want to visit a lot of museums, but we would be interested in visiting – or just seeing – a castle, if it’s not hours out of the way. Trains appeal to us the most, but we are open to some bus transfers.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Amy and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Bern is a nice city with direct trains to Milan (so just 1 change there to Venice) which is super convenient. A scenic route you can take (but not a panoramic train) is to travel from Bern to Brig via Kandersteg. This avoids the fast tunnel and gives you some spectacular scenery on the Lötschberg line.

Overnighting in Brig will still be convenient to catch a train to Milan and on to Venice the next day. You can then visit / view the Stockalper Palace in Brig.

Another town, very well-known for castles, is Bellinzona (there are 3 in the town). You can follow the Gotthard Panoramic Express route to Bellinzona and from there connect to Venice via Milan.

You can use the Swiss railways timetable to find schedules here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable

If you’d like read my trip reports on areas around Brig and Bellinzona here:

Switzerland does have some nice castles, but much more well-known for its mountain experiences – plenty more to choose from there if it is an interest!
