Bernese Oberland Pass or Swiss Travel Pass?

Our itinerary to Switzerland includes 2 adults staying in Luzern and Murren from May 28-30. During that time, we will commute throughout the Berner Oberland by trains, buses, funiculars, and possibly some boat rides. It appears the BO regional pass will cover most of the travel we want except possibly boat rides and city buses around Luzern. We will depart to Italy on May 31 and will need to have train fare from Murren to Spiez for that day (our EuroCity train from Spiez to Milan is already purchased). We will return to Switzerland on June 7 by taking the Bernina railway from Tirano to Zurich.

We’re hoping this forum can provide recommendations on the most effective and inexpensive use of rail passes for us. Should we consider a 3- or 4-day Swiss rail pass in combination with a BO regional pass? Or a 4-day Swiss Rail Flex pass (to cover the return trip to Zurich)? Or is it better to only get a BO regional pass and buy point-to-point tickets to get us to Luzern on the first day and the Bernina route on the last day?

Hi llindahl and welcome to MySwissAlps!

First, you can have a read through our page on ‘how to choose the best rail pass‘ which can be very useful. There is an excel sheet to help you do the math between a rail pass and point to point tickets.

I don’t think it would be worth buying the Swiss Travel Pass and the Regional Pass – Bernese Oberland – one or the other.

Perhaps compare a 4 day Regional Pass Bernese Oberland and then a point to point for the Bernina Express and on to Zurich to the Swiss Travel Pass Flex (4 days, to use on the most expensive 4 days of your trip.) and point to point on the other days.

I think those may be your best options to compare. Train schedules for your trip planning can be found here.
