My husband and I will land in Zurich on Dec 14th early in the morning. We will spend the 14th and 15th with our son who lives in Zurich. We have been to Switzerland a couple of times but haven’t gotten to do the Bernina Express so while he is off working we should do the BE on Monday 16 December. I’m thinking it would be nice to stop and have lunch somewhere along the BE route and then spend the night maybe in Tirano. I would love a suggestion on where to get of the BE for lunch and to stretch our legs as well as a town/hotel/BnB to stay in on the 16th. We need to meet our son in Neuchatel by 12pm on 19 December which of course is Northwest of the BE route. I am open to any suggestions on what to do between the 16-19 even if it doesn’t include the BE.

Just so you know we have been to Bern, Luzern, Interlaken areas.

For lunch I think I would change the train in Pontresina and would go to St. Moritz (http://www.myswissalps.com/st moritz). You could also spend 1 night there before continue the Bernina Express and stay in Tirano.

If you haven’t been there yet, you could also visit Zermatt (http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt/activities).You could travel by the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt: http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/gettingth ere and spend 2 nights there.

Thank you Ildiko for your suggestions! I am going to look into doing the BE and then the GE and then train up to Neuchatel. It’s a lot of riding on the train but after we get to Neuchatel well be going to Crans-Montana for a few days of activities.

It is a lot of traveling but you can stand up anytime on the train, it is much better than a car or bus 🙂 Also you will see wonderful sceneries, so I think it is worth the “effort” :). If you need further advice on rail passes let us know. Happy planning!
