We will be traveling from Milan to Livigno on 23 March 2016. We would love o somehow incorporate traveling on the Bernina Express but are not sure how to do this.

We were thinking of traveling from Milan to Tirano and then joining the Bernina Express to St. Moritz and then will have to double back to get by bus to Livigno.

I have heard that the Bernina Express does not travel everyday.

Please could someone advise us what would be the best thing to do thank you

Hi squirrel,

This is certainly possible: Take a train to Tirano, then a train to St. Moritz (any train is fine, no need to wait for the official Bernina Express). Then take a train to Zernez, and a bus to Livigno from there. There's no backtracking this way. All details are in the timetable.

Hi Arno

thank you so much for your help, much appreciated.

We really would love the experience of the panorama car of the Bernina Express, do you have advice as to if it is available to us to travel on 23 March ? If not then will the normal train you suggest do the same route as the Bernina Express ?

Do we need to pre book tickets or do we just buy on the day ?

Thank you once again

Hi squirrel,

You're welcome! All trains use the same route. There are hourly trains with panoramic cars, so there's no need to wait for a train labeled "Bernina Express". You can buy tickets on the day or online. Seats in the panoramic cars can best be booked in advance. There's a link on our Bernina Express page.

If you plan to do more traveling in Switzerland, a rail pass could be worth it.
