    Hi,

On Sunday, , October 22nd, we are taking a regional train from Tirano to St. Moritz and have a reservation on Bernina Express for the return trip on The same day.I have 2 questions:

    1. We have a Swiss rail pass starting on October 22nd. Does this cover the train from Tirano to St.Moritz?

    2. The weather forecast is predicting rain. Is it worth driving 2 hours from lake como to Tirano to take this excursion in the rain?

    thank you

    Hi Grubern,

    1. Yes the Swiss Travel Pass covers you from Tirano to St Moritz and back.

    2. What have you got to lose if you have a Swiss Travel Pass? At least you will be sitting in a dry train carriage and you may get some snow. You can never be sure – the weather forecast may be wrong. Fingers crossed. At least looks like you might start off from Tirano in sunshine.

Probably not. The main problem is not the rain itself (although raindrops on the window spoil the view for photos), but the mist and fog.

I have been on that trip several times, in the snow, in the sunshine and in the rain. On the rainy day, going across the highest part of the route, the mountain tops were in the clouds, so you couldn’t tell how magnificent they were. At Alp Grüm, the fog competely obscured the beautiful view of the valley and lake below as well as the glacier above.

The lower part of the route, after descending to Le Prese, was clearer.

You could do a google search for webcams at Alp Grüm and Ospizio Bernina to check conditions on the day.
