I noticed on your site that you said you can reserve Bernina Express seats up to 6 months in advance. Because of the current Corona hysteria we (4 of us) wanted to hold off till about 3 months out, just in case there are travel bans. Is this wise? Are there plenty of 2nd class seats, we are going on June 15?

Are reservations able to be cancelled?

We will purchase the STP before the end of the month.

    Thank you

    Dan

    Hi Dan,

Seat reservataions on the Bernina Express can be booked up to 3 months in advance but some reselllers do accept pre-booking much earlier. Check here: http://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress/tickets

These seats once booked are non-refundable unless you have a valid reason such as illness, in which case you must submit your claim with a verified supporting document. But do check with the reseller or agent you made the booking with. They may have different policies pertaining to refunds.

I understand your concern about the current situation with the coronavirus. It is hard to predict how things will pan out in the next few weeks or months. And it is probably wise to wait until April or May to make your seat reservations if you are unsure about your June travel plans.

    Hello Anna,

Is 3 months correct? I have been basing my plans on this thread – http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/seat-reservations-on-the-bernina-express. It says you can reserve seats 6 months in advance.

Also Dan I wonder why you would intend to buy your STP before the end of the month? What is the advantage of getting it so soon when you don’t intend to travel until June? I plan to buy my STP on-line a week before I travel. I am now wondering if I have misread the information I have gathered from this site.

    Hi Victoria,

Thanks for pointing that out. Just checked the Rhaetian Railway website. It seems that you can reserve your seat on the Bernina Express more than 6 months in advance. However this option is only available online. If you are booking over the phone or at the railway ticket office, they will only accept booking up to 3 months in advance. And you can only buy the tickets up to 2 months in advance. Of course you won’t need a ticket if you have a Swiss Travel Pass.

The reason that I was thinking of buying STP soon is there is a deal for Australian citizens that lets you buy a 4 day pass and they give you 5 days (purchase before March 31), this suits our plans but maybe we should weigh up if we lose the lot. The greatest worry is we were intending to travel from Tirano to Milan for a few days then back into Switzerland and I’m not sure if the Swiss or Australians will restrict us from returning from that area.

    Hi Dan,

I saw the Rail Europe deal. You may be interested in this thread – http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/rail-europe-transaction-fees – which I found while researching travel pass options for the trip I am planning in September.

    Hi Dan,

As of now, there is no travel restriction in Switzerland. But your country might have travel restrictions for travellers visiting infected areas or clusters. You might need to go into quarantine when you go back. So do check with your embassy and airlines.
