Hello friends. I have the following planned for Sunday, March 15, 2020.
Lucerne to Lugano
Lugano (10:00) to Tirano
Tirano (14:25) to Filisur
Tickets for both Bernina bus and train have been reserved.
Will we be allowed to do this still given the coronavirus situation?

Hello Shahed,
I think the Italian section will be closed off soon, although the local railway operator (RhB) currently still says that everything is operating as normal. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/does-the-corona-virus-affect-trips-to-switzerland.
If this happens, a scenic alternative route would be Lucerne – Andermatt – Chur/Reichenau – Filisur or Lucerne – Bellinzona – Thusis – Filisur. You’ll find details in the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.
Traveller48Participant4 posts9 March 2020 at 23:25:44 #931299We are trying to cancel our booking, as we were due to travel straight on to Milan, Florence and Venice, but obviously now can’t due to the lockdown and quarantine restrictions. Bernina Express have refunded our seat reservations, but we booked the tickets through Deutsche Bahn and are getting no response yet from their customer services. Has anyone else had any contact with DB, if so do you have an email address please?
ShahedParticipant17 posts9 March 2020 at 23:52:13 #931300Travellor48: We are not canceling. Too much planning went into it. A lot of money has already been sent. We are staying in Switzerland for the whole week. Only one segment involves Italy for a couple of hours.
Arno,
Will you or the moderators update forum if Bernina Express suspends the Italian segment?
ArnoModerator15484 posts10 March 2020 at 7:32:14 #931301Hi Shahed and Traveller48,
The top post of the thread at http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/does-the-corona-virus-affect-trips-to-switzerland is updated frequently. I just added comments about the Bernina Express: people can’t enter Italy. The train will arrive/depart from Tirano as normal, buy travelers can’t enter or leave the station. The bus section in Italy does not operate as far as I know. Within Switzerland, everything operates on normal schedules.
All DB contact information is here: https://www.bahn.com//en/view/home/info/contact.shtml.
Traveller48Participant4 posts10 March 2020 at 9:00:44 #931302Good morning Shahed, given a choice we would not cancel but we had accommodation and flights booked for return to UK from Venice. I hope you enjoy your trip in Switzerland. Arno – thank you for the DB information – we have tried contacting them through the website, but had no response. I was hoping there was a specific customer service email address that anyone knew about.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts16 March 2020 at 7:23:17 #931303Just had an email to say Bernina express is cancelled until April 26th at the earliest!
ArnoModerator15484 posts16 March 2020 at 9:46:23 #931304Hi Kinger89,
That’s correct. The regular trains on the same route are operational though. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/does-the-corona-virus-affect-trips-to-switzerland.
Traveller48Participant4 posts16 March 2020 at 9:58:52 #931305Thanks for the update. Unfortunately we had to cancel the whole trip from the UK as we were travelling on from Tirano to Florence and Venice , so our Easyjet flight home was cancelled.
VictoriaParticipant64 posts16 March 2020 at 10:25:26 #931306But the authorities are discouraging tourists from using public transport which makes things a little tricky. See http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/permalink/nveQiKDW9mqS6v8AAFcRTQ.
ShahedParticipant17 posts16 March 2020 at 10:43:59 #931307We had to cancel our trip because of US travel ban to Europe. Fortunately, every operator in Switzerland including AirBnB has agreed to refund or refunded already.
ArnoModerator15484 posts16 March 2020 at 11:00:40 #931308Hi Victoria,
Yes, absolutely. That’s mentioned in the thread I linked to as well. Just wanted to explain that it’s just the tourist trains that are not operating; all other trains are running. But if there’s no need to travel it’s best not to at the moment.
Traveller48Participant4 posts16 March 2020 at 11:26:40 #931309Shahad – you were fortunate. We booked to stay at Holiday Inn Express in Zurich through Booking.com and they refused to offer us a refund or alternative dates , so we were charged in full. We will make sure we get full cancellation policy next time!
