I will be staying in Interlaken for three nights at the end of this month and was thinking about doing an afternoon day trip on one day that would be less than an hour train ride from either Interlaken train station. I was thinking about Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald – could anyone provide more info about what these villages are like or which you would recommend? Are the cost of train tickets to each about the same price? Thanks!

    Hi svanriessen!

For more information on those villages and what can be done there have a look at our pages here:

Train ticket prices and trip duration can be found using the Swiss railways timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

What would you like to see or do on this day trip from Interlaken? Anything specific or simply visit a nearby Swiss village?

Thanks for those links! Just looking for a scenic village, which I’m sure both are, and it would be great to do an easy but scenic winter hike nearby! Or to find a cool spot for mountain views that’s not as expensive as Jungfrau.

You could train to Lauterbrunnen, take the cable car to Grütschalp and then walk to Mürren. Explore the village and take another cable car down to Stechelberg and the bus back to Lauterbrunnen. That gives you some nice walking and good scenery. All transportation is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.

Wengen is nice, too. And, in Winter, you can take the cableway from Wengen up to Männlichen, have a bite, and look around. In Winter, some trails may be groomed for walking. Your ticket on the cableway will not be free with the STP, but may have a discount.

We are planning this from Interlaken for an afternoon next week when we are there in Switzerland. We have heard that this trip (that includes cable car to Schlithorn) also comes free with our train three day passes.

Yes, the trip to Schilthorn is free with a Swiss Travel Pass. See here for details: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity.

The cableway from Wengen up to Männlichen, that Slowpoke notes, is 50% off only.
