Interlaken, Zermatt or elsewhere for day hikes?

    Hi,

Have 8 days in August, arriving Zurich. Want to go by train to 2 different anchor spots to do day hikes of 4-6 hours, coming back to stay in charming village inn. Would spend 3 nights in each anchor spot.

Know that Interlaken and Zermatt are the heart of beautiful hiking but rather touristy. Been to both over the years. But, are they still the best place to go for this type of trip?

Hate to rent a car this time but not sure how to get around to where trails begin etc. without one.

Appreciate your best advice. Thanks very much.

    Hi CJVI,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! I’m not sure when this trip will be? Interlaken can be quite busy in summer high season, and it’s not in the mountains. It’s close to them though, only short train rides to reach them. You may want to consider smaller villages in the Jungfrau region, please see http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion.

Zermatt is wonderful, and touristy indeed: http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt.

You don’t need a car, that will complicate things in many cases. By public transport you’ll be much more flexible and don’t need to go back to where you started.

Perhaps explore the hikes here to get an idea of your options: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king.
