My husband and I, with our 10 month old son will be traveling to Switzerland in October. We will be arriving in Zurich and are planning to take a train to Zermatt for one night and then continue on to Geneva by train.

I have been looking into Swiss travel pass and trying to determine if it is worth paying for with the travel that we intend to do? Do I need to purchase a separate city pass to be able to use public transit in the cities as well (I.e. Zurich city pass) or will the Swiss Family card be all that we need? Should we purchase the family card online or are they easily accessible at the Zurich airport?

Secondly, is there an easy way to reserve seats on the train? Is it necessary? Last year when traveling in Austria/Hungary we noticed that a lot of the seats were reserved, but we did not know how we were suppose to reserve the seats beforehand.

Finally, any suggestions for must see attractions that are easy with a young child?

    Thanks for your help!

Hello Cor A and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Nice to hear you and your family are coming along to Switzerland!

You’re mixing two passes up here, the Swiss Travel Pass is the one you will want to look into, as the Swiss Family Pass is literally for children between 6-15 year to travel along for free with a pass holder. As your little one is under 5 he will anyway travel for free on all transportation, no ticket needed at all.

For detailed information on the Swiss Travel Pass please see below link (check all the tabs) and use the second link for a step by step instruction on how to best choose your rail pass (don’t miss the super practical spreadsheet provided):

You will NOT need any reservations on Swiss trains, see below link for more input. You can of course if you want but there is no need:

Find recommendations on the area of Zermatt and Geneva in below links, again, make sure to check all the tabs:

And last but not least, make sure to check out the timetable provided below, a very valuable tool for planning, both for day trips and to move from base to base.

One input to give – I would avoid too high altitudes with a toddler, they tend to not enjoy it at all and feel affected by the altitude, as can adults. I’ll attach the medical recommendation of the Jungfraujoch (approx. 3’500 meters above see level), not a mountain you plan to visit, but applicable for any mountain destination.

Best and get back to us anytime.
    Steph
