We are traveling to Lauterbrunnen by car, staying in Wengen and exploring the Jungfrau region for three days, where we want to go to Jungfraujoch, Grindlewald, and maybe Murren. We are then driving to Tasch and staying in Zermatt for three days, where we want to explore the Gornergrat, Schwarzee, and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.

It looks like there are lots of rail pass options: HFC, Bernese Oberland Regioinal Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass, and the Matterhorn Peak Pass. What is the best way to determine what would be the best deals for our family (2 adults + 2 kids under 14)? I don’t know if I should combine the HFC with one of the regional passes? What are the benefits of the Bernese Oberland vs Jungfrau Travel Pass? I’ve read through a lot of posts, but I’m still confused about the best value.

If you are driving the most likely best option is the Swiss Half-fare Card. You get 50% of pretty much all tickets and your kids travel free with Swiss Family Card. Mixing and matching is rarely cost effective.

If you want some confidence in that advice, and don’t mind keeping a supply of headache pills close at hand, you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to all the available passes.

Choosing the best rail pass combination can be quite a challenge, due to the wide offers.

The Swiss Half Fare Card combined with the Swiss Family Card is for sure one of the best options, check below for details:

Thank you. I did need headache medicine after working my way through the options using the spreadsheet…and came to the conclusion that I should bring my question to the forum. I appreciate your advice.
