We are traveling from Geneva to Zermatt on December 17th and than would like to take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur or St. Moritz and the Bernina Express on to Tirano, Italy. Staying 1 – 3 days at each stop. Then we must get to Zurich for our flight home on December 27th. What is the most economical way to purchase the rail pass; a Swiss Travel Flex Pass, Eurail 2 Country Select Pass or individual one-way tickets? I’m having trouble finding this information online.

    Hi Judyjim,

The only way to know which pass is the most economical is to do the math. You will need to plan our your train trips first and then you can compare the costs for each trip and compare that to the different rail passes (and if they cover the route 100% or only partially). Read more about this on our page: How to choose the best rail pass (with helpful excel sheet).

Off the top of my head, a Swiss Travel Pass (8 or 15 days) is probably your best bet (and is certainly the most convenient). The Swiss Travel Pass Flex isn’t often worth the money (8 days on the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is only slightly less than the 15 day Swiss Travel Pass for example).

These travel passes will also cover your local transit with buses as well as boats and some cable cars depending on where you are. Each link above will show you prices, how to buy and where the passes are valid in Switzerland.
