What is the most scenic train route from Lugano to Visp? Is a reservation needed?
Hi CatherineC and welcome to MySwiss Alps,
If you check the SBB Timetable http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable you will be offered two routes. The funny thing is the fastest (but probably least scenic) route offered is via Milan! Reservations are not really required on regluar trains in Switzerland but are in Italy so you will need a reservation for the Italian part.
The route via Göschenen and Andermatt covers part of the scenic Gotthard Panorama Express and part of the iconic Glacier Express route. Reservations not required.
An alternative and faster route not shown on the SBB Timetable is to go from Lugano to Locarno. Then catch the Centovalli Express (TRENO PANORAMICO VIGEZZO VISION) from Lugano (FART) station via Domodossola. This route is said to be quite charming. Reservations are not required but a CHF1.50 surcharge is payable on the Centovalli route.
Hi Catherine,
Further to rockoyster’s suggestion of taking the scenic Centovalli Express from Locarno to Domodossola, you have two choices from Domodossola to Visp.
The most scenic route is to take the PostBus over the Simplon Pass from Domodossola to Brig, then train to Visp. Alternatively, you can take a train through the Simplon Tunnel, but will miss the scenery of course. No reservations are required on the PostBus.
If you are interested, you can read about my experience on the Centovalli Express and PostBus over the Simplon Pass under the heading Saas-Fee to Locarno on the page below. There are also some photos of the Simplon Pass sector.

Nice one Alpenrose! Got to get me some of that PostBus action on the next trip. 😀
Thank you both- terrific information!
