Hello SGus7 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,
Is that the only travel you are planning? Perhaps if we knew more of your itinerary we could offer some better tailored advice.
Before you can know for sure which pass suits your travel plans you need to do the sums based on the cost of all your planned trips on trains, boats, cable cars etc. You can use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to work out the fares for any trip. When you go to buy a ticket the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare. With A Swiss Travel Pass it is free provided it is shown as free on the Area of Validity map ( PDF downloadable from http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity).
You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass).
If you don’t have any form of Swiss Travel Pass you can buy a Junior Travelcard for CHF30 which will cover your child for all accompanied trips during your stay.
With any Swiss Travel Pass you can get the Swiss Family Card to enable free travel for your child.

Thanks for the quick replay.
That is the itinerary. Zurich airport to Zermatt for 4 days. Then we head to Lucerne for 2 days and then back to the airport.
Looking at the area of validity there were some dotted lines heading towards Zermatt… which is how the question came about on whether the Travel pass was good
Not sure what other cable cars etc will be used.

There are dotted red lines which indicate discounts apply. There are dashed red lines which indicate tunnels e.g between Spiez and Visp. Is that what is confusing you?
the trip Zurich to Zermatt is fully covered by STP. Gornergrat railway is 50% discount.

What are you planning to do in Zermatt and Luzern? That is potentially 6 days of (expensive) mountain transport, boat trips etc, which would have a bearing on what pass you get. Once you have a full itinerary, including activities in Luzern and Zermatt, you will be in a better position to decide on a pass.

Hi Gus
we had a trip Zurich to Wengen to Zermatt To Zurich this past September. We looked at the STPflex but the local discount on trains and cable cars in Zermatt and Wengen was only good on the days we activated the flex pass. So it was good for the 3 city to city legs but the in between days you had to pay full price. For us it worked out better to buy Half Fare card and point to point for the cities and a regional pass in Wengen and Zermatt ( at half price) for local cable cars and trains. But we stayed more than 4 days in Wengen and Zermatt and made extensive use of the local trains and cable cars. For 4 days, I wouldn’t be surprised if you might be better off with just the STP or the Half Fare card only and get a discount on local cable cars not filly covered but I bet it will be close in price to buying a regional pass if you plan on using the cable cars and cog trains much.
