I know you can take a train from Zurich to Konstanz using a Swiss Rail Pass. First can you use the Swiss Rail Pass for a boat from Konstanz to Lindau?

We would like to travel around the south end of the lake through Austria returning back to Zurich. What is the best way to do this?

I went down the western shore to Rorschach and took a ferry across the Lindau. The Konstanz to Rorschach leg is free and the Rorschach to Lindau leg 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass. You can also do a river cruise from Konstanz to Schaffhausen which is very pleasant (and free with Swiss Travel Pass). You can hop off at Stein am Rhein which is worth a look.

Actually come to think of it we caught a train to Rorschach but a boat trip is possible too.

Depending on what time you are travelling the timetables differ. See sbsag.ch/pages/kurssch ifffahrt and http://www.bsb.de/en/t imetable-one.html
