I have just returned from a 5 night trip to Switzerland with my wife We stayed in Brienz overlooking the lake. On our way to the train station, we noticed that the road bridge is mounted on rails and has chains attached, presumably for the purpose of moving the bridge sideways, and leaving a big gap in the road. beneath the bridge is a gully, I guess for draining the snow into the lake. We are both very curious to know the reason for mounting the bridge on rails.

    Does anyone have any idea

    Regards

    Richard and April

    Hi Richard and April,

I hope you enjoyed Brienz! The bridge you are probably referring to is the Trachtbachbrücke, about 200 m from the train station. It can be moved away to allow more water to flow to the lake in extreme circumstances. This should also prevent building a new bridge each time I guess.

More details are here: dimx.ch/bauten/trachtb achbruecke/
