we will be staying in zermatt in april 2018. can we take the Glacier express half way and return back to zermatt ? or is it possible to do zermatt- lucerne return (using glacier express and Gotthard panorama express) in a day?

Yes, you could do the Glacier Express to Andermatt and then return on a regional train later that day (or possibly on the Glacier Express train itself again, if the timing works out. Check out the timetable to your date of travel. The Glacier Express is noted as GEX. We talk about partial trips on our website for the Glacier Express.

You could go to Lucerne as you note, but a very long day as a return trip.

Hello Shikinadib,

To make a return trip from Zermatt worth it (scenery wise) I would recommend to travel at least as far as Disentis. Quite a long trip. Depending on your other plans in Switzerland there might be better ways to include the Glacier Express and/or Lucerne.
