We will be in Switzerland from 7th to 16th June. Our bases are – Luzern 3 days, Wengen 3 days, Zermatt 2 days, and Montreux 1 day.One of our party wants to make a short self driven car trip. He is an excellent driver, having driven before in Himachal pradesh and kashmir. So comfortable with mountain driving. But we are also worried about traffic rules, specially no car zones and signage (don’t understand German). Is there any place where we can make a short trip without getting in trouble?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Pbmuthal,

Destinations such as Wengen and Zermatt are car-free zones. The only way to travel to these places is by public transport.

If you plan to rent a car, you can find options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/car/carrental

You can find practical information about driving in Switzerland here: http://www.myswissalps.com/car

The following link includes some scenic drive suggestions: http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/scenictrips/car

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thanks Anna. Your links are very useful. My friend doesn’t have the stomach for a long trip. He was thinking more of of short, may be half day excursion. For example, in Italy, we made 1/2 day trip from Florence to Greve. Any such short trip would you suggest? Preferably on less crowded roads.

    Hi again,

Based on your itinerary, you could possibly rent a car in Montreux and drive along the short but scenic route along the lake from Montreux to Geneva. Also there are various possibilities near Lucerne especially around the lake.

    Regards,

    Anna
