We have a one week holiday booked in Grindelwald, mainly to do hiking and trekking in the Jungfrau region. We are flying in and out of Zurich, so we need transport to get to and from Grindelwald.

In this respect, we are unsure whether to rent a car from Zurich airport for the whole week, or whether to use Swiss trains and one of the train passes (eg. the Jungfrau Travel Pass).

we would appreciate any suggestions or comments to the above.

    Thanks

    Eugene

Hi Eugene and welcome to MySwissAlps!

If you have no particular reason, I strongly recommend choosing trains over car hire. Trains and other public transport are the best way to explore Switzerland. It is safe, convenient and eco-friendly.

Driving can be tricky on the mountain routes if you are not used to it: http://www.myswissalps.com/car/drivinginthemountains. You should also be aware of the speed limits as Swiss traffic fines are really high. Here you can learn more about the Swiss traffic regulations: http://www.myswissalps.com/car/trafficregulations.

This one is a good article regarding cars vs trains: http://www.myswissalps.com/carversustrain.
If you still decide to travel by car, make sure you review this practical information: http://www.myswissalps.com/car and http://www.myswissalps.com/co2compensation.

You can read about the Jungfrau Travel Pass at http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrautravelpass. (make sure to check all the tabs)

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko

    Hay Ewarr1,

driving a car in Switzerland is a personal preference, let’s say you enjoy driving and and you love the convenience to stop anywhere you want to, just put your bags in the car and stop point to point..then yes go for car it’s a experience in it self, but as IIdiko said, you need to be very careful about the rules/ parking issues, also do check where you stay if it has parking option, most hotels request additional fee for parking, / fines(not necessary you will get one ) but yea …, i would also recommend that if you go for car option make your research through in choosing the provider(user reviews) I have seen people get caught with bad providers, on the contrary for train with travel pass, they are blessing, and they come with many benefits .. there is not a single place where you cannot travel with local transport(except for May be a very remote place). Swiss Trains offer Less hustle And great experience in itself.

    Best Regards

    Hello.

I would recommend the car for a short period of time, but I would use trains locally .. so it is still more convenient
