    Hello Moderators and others,

We are planning to visit Lugano on day trip from Luzern in early May. Our plan looks like this:

    Route 1:

Luzern to Lugano, funicular to top of Mte Bre, down back to Cassarate Mte Bre bus stop to Lugano, hop on cruise on Lake Lugano , disembark at Gandria and explore, cruise back to Lugano and explore.

    OR

    Route 2:

Luzern to Lugano, funicular to top of Mte Bre, down back to Cassarate Mte Bre bus stop , walk to Gandria and explore, cruise back to Lugano and explore

I know that one can take the hiking trail from the top of Mte Bre to Gandria, but I don’t think we are up for 1hr 40 hike.

    My questions are the following;

    1. Is there a bus service from Cassarate Mte Bre bus stop in the direction of Gandria ? The only one I found on SBB, was taking me back towards Lugano to catch a bus.

    2. Can one walk from Cassarate Mte Bre bus stop towards Gandria? How long will this take, and is this a moderate or easy walk.

Any feedback on my 2 routes, or any other suggestions, would be appreciated.

    Regards, Louise

    Hello Louise,

    In answer to your questions:

    1. You would need to take a bus and alight at Castagnola, Tamporiva. Thereon, you can walk to Gandria, approximately 35 minutes. (Bus B12 from Cassarate Mte Bre, direction Bre, Paese). You can view the schedule via this timetable link: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    2. This is considered a pleasant, easy walk, taking around 45 minutes. More details on the Cassarate Mte Bre to Gandria section of the hike here: https://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/castagnola-gandria/route

You know best, what you would be capable of. If you are concerned that the hike could be too much, by all means, take the relaxing boat option from Lugano 🙂 https://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakelugano

Other activities in the Lugano area can be found here: https://www.myswissalps.com/lugano/activities

I hope this helps, feel free to reach out with any further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

To help you decide, the walk in either direction between Cassarate and Gandria is very easy and nice. We walked slow and stopped for a little at times and I think it was 1 1/2 hours. You can do it much faster. The best part of Gandria is the lower area by the lake, and it’s a steep hike up to the main road. Taking the boat is better.

Thanks to everyone. I think we will play it by ear, whether we walk from Cassarate Mte Bre to Gandria, or take the bus and shave off some time in our walk. Either way, I will definitely take the boat back to Lugano.

    Thanks for the map link.

    Regards,

    Louise

    Hey Yolanda,

Regarding the bus from Cassarate Mte Bre to Castagnola, Tamporiva, can we take any bus that stops at Castagnola Tamporiva (e.g. direction Gandria Paese, Direction Aldesago, Ronchée} ? Just asking because you mentioned that I should take the bus in direction of Bre Paese.

    Regards,

    Louise

    Hi Louise,

Yes, you can either take Bus 490 or Bus 12. Both buses stop at Castagnola, Tamporiva along the way.

You can find details about the walk from Cassarate to Gandria here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/lugano-gandria/route
