Hi-
Lausanne is only 25 min by train from Montreux, so you could conceivably stay in one and see the other too. However, if your mom doesn’t walk well (hills), I’d say Montreaux. This region is hilly, but it is flatter in Montreaux in the promenade area by the lake.
In Montreux – there is medieval island castle, Château de Chillon, with ramparts, formal halls and a chapel with 14th-century murals. This was very cool. Otherwise, it’s a touristy Lake Geneva tourist town. See the FREE Queen museum at the Casino. It talks about the band, as they recorded in Montreaux. We felt that this was a REALLY GOOD and informative museum. You can also take boat trips on Lake Geneva (maybe go to France?). We stayed in the funicular station in Glion at the top of the hill above Montreux.
Between Lasaunne and Montreux is Lavaux — a UNESCO site. Lavaux is a bunch of steep terraced vineyards that stretch for about 30 km. This would not be good for your mom. We stopped and did some tastings and then visited Vinorama.
I’ve not toured Lasaunne. It’s home to the International Olympic Committee headquarters, he Olympic Museum and lakeshore Olympic Park. However, it’s very hilly away from the lake.
If you have two days, maybe you can tour the castle, see the Queen museum, and work out a boat ride (boat to France, boat to Castle). Promenade is flat for walking.
Have fun.

This was where we stayed — LOVED this view, and the funicular was convenient (but isn’t quiet — the engine is in the building and you do hear beeping). But, the restaurant in the building was delicious — and they manage the apartment. I’d stay here again. It is a million dollar view. There seem to be lots of options on VRBO. This caught my eye given the view and location with the funicular. It is technically in Glion.

Hi SophieLove,
A agree with disantor’s suggestion to stay in Montreux instead of Lausanne. You can search through a list of accommodations here: http://www.myswissalps.com/montreux/hotels
In addition to his suggestions of things to do in the area, you’ll find more options in the following links:
