Hi,

We have booked Hotel and planned to spend 5 days in and around Interlaken & Jungfrau region excluding check in and check out days. We want to visit Zermatt/Matterhorn from Interlaken on 1 day out of 5 days with peak2peak pass in Matterhorn region either 1st day or last day of the trip,so we can cover Interlaken region with 4 day Bernese oberland pass. I wanted to know what is the cheapest way to go and return to Zermatt from interlaken in a day with 2 adults and 2 kids of 3 years and 7 years old. Is there any day travel pass available for families to travel ? Peak2peak pass has discount of 50% with GA/Swiss travel pass, any inputs to reduce overall ticket prices to Zermatt are welcome. Please provide options.

Hi Fun4,

If I understand it correctly, you plan to travel to Zermatt on a day on which your Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland is not valid. In that case a Saver Day Pass will probably be cheaper than regular tickets: https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass.

Alternatively, you can get a 6-day Regional-Pass and profit from discounts on all days. A large part of the ride to Zermatt would be for free. You can check the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland’s coverage by downloading the map from https://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity. As you’ll see there, the trip is free up to Brig (if you use the local RegioExpress Lötschberger route: http://www.myswissalps.com/lotschberger). So then you’ll only need an additional return ticket Brig-Zermatt: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland.

Yet another option would be to get an additional Swiss Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard). Then you can buy discounted tickets for the trip to Zermatt, profit from reduced fares for the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland (see https://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/price), have your children travel along for free on all routes with the free Swiss Family Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard), and get a 25% discount (not 50%) on the Peak2Peak Pass in Zermatt/50% discount on mountain transport near Zermatt.

You’ll need to run some calculations as explained at https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses if you want to make sure which option is most economical.

I have got some confusion about the half price card and family card for regional pass bernese oberland.

Do I need to purchase half price card for 2 adults each one?Also, do I get discount on Peak2peak pass in Zermatt with the purchase of Saverday pass?

With the saverday pass, Do I need to take another train from Birg or Visp to reach Zermatt?

Please clarify .

Each adult needs his/her own Swiss Half Fare Card. The Swiss Family Card can be added for free. When purchasing, just indicate that children will travel along and the Swiss Family Card option will be presented: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/price.

The Saver Day Pass doesn’t offer any discounts on the Peak2Peak Pass. Please refer to http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/validity. Only some discounts cards for Swiss residents, and their ‘tourist equivalents’ such as the Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass) and Swiss Half Fare Card, do. Prices and discounts for the Peak2Peak Pass can be found at: http://www.matterhornparadise.ch/en/Book/Online-tickets/Peak2Peak. By the way, a 50% discounted is listed now for Swiss Travel Pass/Swiss Half Fare Card holders (I could swear it stated a 25% discount yesterday, which I already thought was curious as 50% is the usual discount percentage for most mountain transportation).

The Saver Day Pass is valid on the entire Swiss railways network (you can download the map from http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/validity), so you can take any route you want – unlike the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland that requires you to use the ‘local’ route via Brig, Goppenstein and Kandersteg. Does that answer your last question?

It is clear now. I think it is better to purchase Swiss Half Fare Card, Bernese Oberland regional pass for overall cheaper fares. What is the difference among Junior Travelcard , Children’s Co-Travelcard and Swiss Family Card. It is not clear,which is more beneficial for tourists with Kids.

The Swiss Family Card can be obtained by those who get a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex or Swiss Half Fare Card: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard. If you do that, you can ignore the other options. The Junior Travelcard comes in handy if the parents don’t have one of the mentioned rail passes, and the Children’s Co-Travelcard is for children traveling with adults who aren’t their parents: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/discounts.
