my group is interested in doing the glacier express on june 6. the whole route will take at least 7 hours. since it is that long we are thinking of shortening the trip from chur (base camp) to andermatt and back. my questions are:

    1) any idea how long will this trip be?

    2) since i am still searching for the website for the timing of the returning trip, does anyone have an idea of how long we will wait?

    3) aside from hiking, what else can be done in andermatt? any culinary suggestions for the area? winery?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Nini,

There is a detailed description of the Chur and Andermatt section of the Glacier Express on our dedicated page here http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/gettingth ere

To see the duration and timing of the trip, you can check the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

I have not been to Andermatt personally, however as a ski area in the winter, this would be a typical hiking, cycling and mountain playground in the summer.

Hope this helps, and I am sure others will have suggestions as well.

    Maria.

If you want to go from Chur to Andermatt and back then forget the Glacier Express. Just take regular trains – avoid the savage seat reservation charges.

    Ignore the Glacier Express.

For Chur – Andermatt you take the hourly train (departs at xx.56) Chur – Disentis/Muster (RhB railway). Change at Disentis into an MGB railway train to Andermatt.

It is all shown on this official timetable PDF:

    http://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/ fileadmin/fap_pdf_fiel ds/2019/920.pdf

However there is no real need to go as far as Andermatt. You could stop at OberalpPass

Andermatt is a military town, and incidentally is far too high for wine growing…
