Hi Frappuccino,
The day trip you mention is possible, but it will be a long day. If you want to get a glimpse of both towns, I’d personally prefer an alternative.
There’s indeed a GoldenPass Belle Époque train leaving Montreux at 14:50, but it will be 18:21 by the time you reach Bern and you’ll also have to get back to Geneva. How about getting an earlier train Montreux-Zweisimmen-Bern for example, such as the 12:50 one which is a GoldenPass Panoramic train? Or skip the GoldenPass line and get a quicker connection Montreux-Bern. In both cases you’ll have enough time to visit the Chillon Castle and some of Montreux, but you’ll also have some time to explore Bern, have dinner and return to Geneva. Or have dinner on board the train from Bern to Geneva: http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/culinary/dineonthemove.
Please see the pages below for tips about Montreux, the Chillon Castle, the GoldenPass and Bern:

Thankyou so much for your help.
I think I will give up on the Belle Époque train and will do the earlier Golden Pass line .
I was actually wondering if this route from Montreux to Zweismenn is worth visiting ?
we will be also taking the train from Lucerne to Interlaken and that is also the Golden Pass . So if we skip the Montreux to Zweismenn do you think we will be missing anything ?
Also I see that’s we can also do Montreux to Gstaad and then to Bern . But I think all the trains go through Zweismenn and Spiez . Is there a shorter connection possible to Bern ?
Also we will be using our Swiss Travel Pass . So should we reserve seats for Golden Pass ? Our dates are august 12 .
Thank you

Hi Frappuccino,
the Golden Pass is quite beautiful, but there are many wonderful attractions and other views in Switzerland. 🙂 You can read about the detailed Golden Pass route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere.
The fastest way from Montreux to Bern is via Lausanne. If you check the SBB timetable, that always shows the easiest and fastest ways. In case you are not familiar with the timetable, please start here: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.
No seat reservation is needed on the Golden Pass. If you still want, you can reserve your seats here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets.

To be honest I think travelling with a four year old a day trip to both Montreux and Bern is too much.
In Bern, young children will love to see the Bears (I first saw them at about the same age nearly 60 years ago!) and Bern is worth a whole day trip from Geneve.
