Hi, I am planning to do a day trip in early October 2019 from Interlaken to First / Bachalpsee Lake and Schynige Platte. I intend to do the First Cliff Walk and Bachalpsee Lake hike while just sightseeing to Schynige Platte, Is this doable in a day? If so please advise how do I get to First / Bachalpsee Lake and Schynige Platte.

    Thank you, Henry

Good day Henry and welcome to MySwissAlps!

If you are in the area it is doable in one day. Go to Grindelwald (best by train), walk through the village to the lower station of the First gondola. Ride the gondola to First. Hike to Schynige Platte, you’ll pass via the Bachalp Lake. At Schynige Platte you can rail down to Wilderswil, then Intelaken. Note the hike is an alpine hike requiring good shoes, rain protection equipment, and if you are over 55 have hiking poles.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the details Snowman. This gives me a better idea of the hike and I don’t think I am ready to do the alpine hike. Is there a train/gondola option for me to travel from First to Schynige Platte instead?

    Hello Henry,

Please find a nice recommendation for exploring the Jungfrau Region in a day without hiking below, nicely mapped out.

To find out about traveling times for this trip use our timetable below, a valuable tool for planning, it’s worth reading how it works:

You would have to “come off” the Mount First and “climb” the Schynige Platte (by transportation) if you don’t want to hike, as you’ll see using the timetable.

    Henry,

Congratulations for putting safety first. As Steph says, once you’ve been to First, you could go back to Grindelwald by gondola, then to Wilderswil by train, and do a roundtrip to Schynigge Platte by train.

You could (also or instead) hike from First to Bachalpsee and back. That’s an easy hike that normally takes less than two hours (First-Lake-First, not counting stops). Now if the purpose is to shoot a pictures of peaks reflecting in the lake, keep in mind that with even the smallest breeze, the lake will not be as smooth as a mirror. These famous mirror photos are made by photographers who have the time and the organization to be there just at the right time.
