    Hi Camahesh,

If you wish to take the scenic route to Lugano from Interlaken, the most popular option is to take the Gotthard Panorama Express. The route will take you to Lucerne then to Lugano in about 4.5 hours. It’s a long trip and ideally you should spend a night in Lugano so you will have enough time to explore the town and its surroudings, maybe even include a side trip to Locarno or Bellinzona. More details about the Gotthard Panorama Express are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress

For sightseeing suggestions in Lugano and nearby surroundings, please use these links:

A single train journey from Interlaken to Zermatt takes a little over 2 hours so yes, it is possible to visit Zermatt and do a mountain excursion in one day. I would recommend going up the Gornergrat as the base station is located just across the Zermatt train station.

    Hope this was useful.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hello Camehesh,

Why? It is at least a 9 hour round trip from Interlaken Ost to Lugano. That is using the fastest, not necessarily most scenic routes, and without stopping to look at anything.

Aside from rockoyster’s comment, it would help to know what time of the year you plan to visit as that will impact your plans. Winter, for example, has fewer daylight hours.

And, as to your excursion question, it helps to know how many days you’ll be in Switzerland, especially in the Interlaken area.

    Hello CAMAHESH,

    Thanks for your questions!

All though it is possible to make a day trip to Lugano from Interlaken, it is rather a long trip by train. The train journey to Lugano is around 4 hours and 30 minutes, one way! By the time you get to Lugano, you won’t have much time to sightsee. Lugano is such beautiful place, and deserves at least one full day to sightsee. I will attach the link to the train schedule. This will help you plan according.

Please let us know when you plan to visit Switzerland and how many days. I will attach some links to help you get started on your own.

    I hope this helps!

    Best regards,

    Suzanne
