Hi 02bmmw and welcome to MySwissAlps!
You don’t need the Swiss Half Fare Card at all to buy the Saver Day Pass. But if you do get the SHFC you don’t need it before buying the Saver Day Pass no.
It does get you a cheaper price when buying the Saver Day Pass though. And it gives you discounts on mountains that you mostly don’t get with the SDP. Read more here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/onedaytravelpass /details.
The one day travel pass is a different product and does require you to have the Swiss Half Fare Card (but you don’t need to get it first either) https://www.myswissalp s.com/onedaytravelpass.
More information on the Swiss Half Fare Card, incuding purchase options, can be found at myswissalps.com/swissh alffarecard.

Thank you. So if I decide to buy a few saver day passes today for travel in August, can I buy them at the half fare rate now even though I did not buy a half fare card yet? Can I then buy the half fare card upon arrival in ZRH or before I use one of the saver day passes?

Hi 02bmmw,
Yes, you should be able to buy discounted Saver Day Passes, as long as you can show both this pass as well as your Swiss Half Fare Card when traveling. It’s much easier to buy your Swiss Half Fare Card online and print it at home from one of the retailers at myswissalps.com/swissh alffarecard/price. Queues at the rail station of Zurich can be pretty long. Plus, if you order online you’ll have a (digital) copy that can be printed again in case of loss or damage.
