We we are travelling to Lucerne in July . Do we need to book are gondola tickets in advance . Will there be long queues . We have bought a Swiss pass so want to take advantage of 50 per cent discount . If we buy tickets on the day are we guaranteed to board the gondola soon after or are there huge queues ??

Hi Toby and Welcome to MySwiss Alps,

Which particular gondolas did you have in mind? If you mean Pilatus then there is no booking system. Just first come first served. Get an early start. You will need to show your Swiss Travel Pass at the ticket office at Kriens to get a discounted ticket.

Typically in the summer most mountains are busy and there are queues. Very hard to avoid in peak season. However buying tickets in advance doesn’t mean you still won’t have to wait in line. I would would until the day before to make sure the weather looks good either way.

Some mountains, like Stanserhorn near Lucerne, you can book specific times – but mostly it isn’t a set time, just a ticket that would get you up that day….
