We are wanting to drive from Annecy to Lugano in mid-April and, ideally, we would like to go through one of the passes.

We want to admire the scenery and not go through the tunnel, if possible.

    Which one would you suggest??

Will the passes actually be open?

    Thanks

    Jean

    Hi Jean,

No, most passes won’t open until late May or June so I don’t think it would work. You can find details of traffic information here (and links to web pages with Alpine Pass current status).

Most mountain passes will be closed.

I can think of only one ‘highland’ option

Normally you would be able to go Annecy – Chamonix – Martigny in winter but the Col de la Forclaz is closed by rockfall which happened during the very bad weather a few months ago.

The only option therefore would be Annecy – Genève – Lausanne – Sion – Brig – Simplon Pass (kept open all winter) Domodossola, Italian road number SS33 to Gravellona then SS34 to Intra and along Lake Maggiore (some sections right by the lake) – Locarno – Lugano (around 7 hours but pretty scenic all told)
