Hi, my family is traveling within Europe in July. We are starting in Paris, then going to Northern Italy, with the bulk of our time spent in Switzerland. I’m trying to figure out if it’s smarter to get a Eurail Select Pass or do point to point then a Swiss Travel Pass to cover Swiss train and other travel. Does the Eurail Select Pass allow for free travel in Switzerland or just discounted travel? Thanks a lot.

Hi LexMcQ and welcome to MySwissAlps1

The Eurail Select Pass offers some free travel and some discounted travel in Switzerland (and some travel not covered at all). These passes tend to be worth it if you are traveling a fair bit in all 3 countries.

The Swiss Travel Pass covers all travel most free but some routes into the mountains are discounted only.

Check out the PDF maps and attraction list on the following links for those rail passes to compare:

To know which pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂
