Hello TammyB and Welcome to MySwissAlps,
Nice to hear you’re coming along!
Regarding your questions:
Correct, if you get a Swiss Travel Pass the journey from either airport will entirely be covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. Check the map in below link for details:

There is no major difference between arriving to Zurich or Basel, whereas Zurich is much bigger and I believe more comfortable to arrive to. The main questions however will be price and travelling time to Lauterbrunnen, for which you can use below timetable link:

Also check:

Hope this answers your questions.
Best,
Steph

Hi TammyB-
Mid-October is the tail end of the “Summer” tourist season in the Alps. At or near the end of October, various facilities start to shut down. And, you are beginning to reach the time when snow is not out of the question. So, make sure to check timetable and operating information about access to various trails.
Altitude matters for the weather. Keep in touch with the tourist info office in Lauterbrunnen, and webcams:

The SBB timetable can help, and the instructions here are very useful:

Here is one example, as well:
http://www.wengen-info.ch/index.php/frei zeit/transport/luftsei lbahn-wengen-m%C3%A4nnlichen.html
Some mountain transport stops service on October 27. The last day of service for the Luftseilbahn from Wengen to Männlichen is October 27th.
So, “mid-October” should be fine, if the weather cooperates.

At Basel, you must take a shuttle bus for a several mile journey to the maim station in downtown Basel.
At Zürich, the train station is across the street from the arrivals hall exit.

Thank you Steph and Slowpoke for your input. As I continue my research, I may reach back out for further input.
I’m still deciding which may work better for us, the Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card. I realize only I can answer that question, but as this is our first time to Switzerland, and being unsure of the weather, I don’t know how realistic it is to think that we can walk most places.
Thank you, again.

If you just do the Berner Oberland then the Berner Oberland Pass is better than the Swiss Travel Pass I think.
Are you intending to fly from Munich to Switzerland? If so that is not a great idea. It’s a shortish journey by land.

Agree – 6 1/2 to 8 hours by train.
From Zuerich airport to LB takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. Add time to get to airport at München and be there well ahead of flight time….
The train may be slightly longer, but is less hectic. There is direct service with no changes from Muenchen Hbf to Zuerich Hbf….3 hours 42 minutes…

I did consider the Regional Pass, but thought for 30 CHF more, we might like the potential flexibility of the STP. I’m wondering if the Swiss Half Fare Card makes more sense. I can’t seem to find prices on the SBB website for the mountain transport options.
Yes, we did consider train from Munich. We thought with such limited time in Switzerland, maybe that didn’t make sense. Your comments have me thinking differently, so will look again.
Thank you both.

Well said.

I’m no expert. The half-fare card meets my overall needs.

You may need to go the Jungfraubahn website to get pricing…not sure of exact link.

Hi Tammy,
Yes, the rail pass questions is normally one of the harder ones to answer, as the choices are quite varied. Use Slowpokes above link to get an overview.
To support your planning with detailed calculations to compare rail pass options you will find a very helpful spreadsheet in the following link. The detailed maths, as you say, are up to you though. 🙂

I will do some more work on this. Thank you.
Is the SBB website the best place to search for train prices/tickets from Munich to Zurich, or is there a German website for that?

The Geman rail website is really excellent:

So is the SBB. For that journey I’d think either one would work.
