We’re trying to decide whether to buy a 1st or 2nd class rail pass. We’re planning a trip on the Gotthard and the Bernina scenic trains. If we have a second class train pass can we upgrade to first class on the scenic trains? Do you know what that would cost? Can you pay for a seat reservation and a first class upgrade on each train? Should we have our reservations before we leave the states?

You can upgrade to 1st class on any train trip for 1/2 the price difference between a 1st class and 2nd class ticket.

The Gotthard Panorama Express (GPE) train is only panoramic in 1st class.
Reservations for the GPE and the Bernina Express should be done as early as possible – they are very popular trips.

You can reserve 1st class now if that is what you want, and just make sure you upgrade your ticket to 1st class before getting on the train (if you don’t buy a 1st class Swiss Travel Pass:
