    Hello Swiss Expert,

My family (One is 14 years old) and I will visit Switzerland on December last week. We plan to go to Zermatt from Zurich and return on the same day.

However, I am confused when i buy ticket or pass.

    Few questions here:

    1. Initially i want to buy SBB point to point ticket. However, it doesn’t show the departure and return timing. Is it a risk that there is no seat on the time when we board? Point to point means we can board any train and any time even we miss out the connection , right?

    2. When i search more, i know there is a Swiss Travel pass which is much cheaper for 3 days use. And it seems i can also take any train for free.

So can you advise for my planned trip, is the Swiss travel pass a better choice?

    Thank you!

    Warm Regards,

    GYS

If you travel with a point to point ticket you can use any train – no reservations are required. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass), once you have paid the purchase price you can travel on any of the routes shown as ‘unlimited travel’ on the validity map for ‘free’. In your case that means all the way from Zurich to Zermatt. You would get a discount on the mountain lines once in Zermatt

Be warned however that Zurich – Zermatt is a long way for a day trip (6.5 hours there and back), unless you made an early start (eg 07.00 from Zurich HB) and late finish (eg 18.00 from Zermatt), you wouldn’t have all that much practical time in Zermatt, or to go up the best railway in Switzerland, the Gornergratbahn

Hi GYS and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

At http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland you can read about the point to point tickets and how they work.

Regarding the Swiss Travel Pass, you can find the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. Make sure to check the other tabs on that page, to learn more about the Swiss Travel Pass.

In case you have a Swiss Travel Pass, your 14 years old child will get the Swiss Family Card for free – with that your child can travel for free: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard.

If you want to buy just point to point tickets you can still buy the Junior Travel Card for your child: http://www.myswissalps.com/juniortravelcard. It costs 30 CHF and with that, your child can travel for free.

If you need a rail pass just for one day, check the Saver Day Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass.

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have further questions,

    Ildiko

    Thank you for the information.

You mention the swiss family card for my 14 years children for free. How can I got the card? Does it come with travel pass?

    H Gys25016m,

Yes, Zurich to Zermatt is free with the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity). Solid red lines indicate free traveling.

You can order along the Swiss Family Card while purchasing your Swiss Travel Pass. The pages below can help:
