We are staying in Geneva at the end of April 2018. Because of construction work on the GoldenPass Line, we will not be going on that scenic route. What is the best city/town to travel to by train from Geneva if we want to see the Alps and some great scenery from the train? We have about four days including the train trip plus staying at the destination, whatever it is. We will then fly back to London (for our trip home to Sydney).

Hi margysydny and welcome to MySwissAlps!

you can still take the Golden Pass even with construction (if you want). There is a small section where you are transferred to a bus but otherwise it is still a nice trip. You could take the route to Interlaken and on to the Jungfrau region or to Lucerne.

Another area to look at is Zermattwith the Matterhorn and then the Glacier Express train to St. Moritz and then to Zurich.

Be sure to use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out the trips to see what works for you.

Are you flying out of Zurich then? Have you looked at rail passes for those 4 days?

Lucas – can I ask another question: we have now booked to stay in Geneva to start with, but from what you say, it might still be possible to take the Golden Pass Line heading south to north. I guess we would board in Montreux, is that right? Or is there somewhere else we could board that would bypass the construction section? Where is the best place to get off the Golden Pass train, if we want to stay two or three nights? Does it go to Luzern?

Alternatively,if we want to take a train direct (no train changes) to somewhere that takes in some great scenery but is not a “scenic” route can you make a recommendation please? Bern perhaps?

Yes, you can take the Golden Pass line from Montreux, it stops at Zweisimmen and Interlaken before reaching Luzern. I don’t think it is worth trying to bypass the construction – the process of getting on and off the bus should be quite seamless.

You could also travel to Bern via Neuchâtel if you like. I haven’t done that route so can’t speak of the scenery. You should look into the town links above to see what interests you. For mountain trips go to Luzern or a village like Wengen (near Interlaken).
