    Hi Travelgamma,

No, if you have the Swiss Travel Pass (1st class) then you just need to make reservations. If you have a 2nd class Swiss Travel Pass you need to buy an upgrade ticket before boarding the train.

You’ll need to buy an upgrade ticket before boarding the train. You can do this at the station before boarding the train – just reserve a 1st class seat now.

    >> How do they know I have the swiss travel pSs??

When you are making the reservation, you will come to a page with the heading Travellers – train ticket / reduction selection.

As well as putting in your personal details, you select one of the options in the Reduction box. If you intend to get a Swiss Travel Pass, you select Swiss Travel Pass – (-Flex, -Youth, -Youth Flex) as your reduction type.

Selecting this option means you will only be charged for a reservation, not for a full ticket. They don’t care whether you already have the Swiss Travel Pass or not, but you will need to present both the pass and the reservation to the conductor on the train.

You will also need to present your class upgrade for the whole trip to the conductor, showing your entitlement to occupy seats in first class seats if your Swiss Travel Pass is only for second class. The class upgrade will cost you 50% of the difference between the 1st and 2nd class fares for your journey. You can buy that at any staffed railway station in Switzerland.

Here are the phrases for change of class for a sector in three of the national languages of Switzerland:

    • German: Klassenwechsel für eine Strecke
    • French: Surclassement pour un trajet
    • Italian: Cambio di classe per una tratta

Do you mean buy the Class Upgrade in advance? You can buy on-line at http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelca rds-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/class-upgrade.html or using the SBB App on a smartphone (http://www.sbb.ch/en/timetabl e/mobile-apps/sbb-mobile.html).

I am purchasing my seat reservation for the Glacier Express today. I chose seats11and 12 in first class.

are these seats ok. I cannot tell if these are right or left side of train.

Also if I understand right 2 months in advance I will purchase my ticket.

    thank you

I think you already have a Swiss Travel Pass 2nd Class?

If so you don’t need tickets. Just a Class Upgrade as described above. You can buy this at anytime prior to boarding the train.

You can’t guarantee which side of the train your seats will be on.

You only need a route specific class upgrade as explained above. The STP is your ticket.

My trip on the GE is May 19th. Am I right that i can only book 2 monhs in advance.

I did a mock purchase and it looked like the only option given to me was half fare card and it was going to cost 90$ for my husband is this right?

A Class Upgrade will cost half the difference between 1st and 2nd Class fares.

You can’t buy a Class upgrade yet. Once you have reservation you can upgrade much closer to your travel time. Try again early May.

You haven’t mentioned how much of the Glacier Express route you’re following.

From Zermatt to St Moritz will cost CHF58 each. See attached. You have to use half-fare to get the right price.

A 1-day Class upgrade is actually slightly cheaper – CHF52. You have to select GA Travelcard reduction when buying. GA is domestic equivalent of the Swiss Travel Pass.

Route specific upgrade is then CHF45.50.
