We are scheduled to travel to Switzerland in Sept and have already learn so much from this forum. We are going to finalize are plans and would appreciate any advice.

We will be traveling from Lyon, France to Switzerland.

Day 1. travel from Lyon to Geneva. then activate Swiss travel pass and go on to Gimmelwald. Walk around the village. We heard this is beautiful small village up in the Alps.

Day 2. Take Schilthornbahn lift to Stechelberg. then walk along river to Lauterbrunnen. Take cable to Grutschalp, then walk to Gimmelwald

Day 3. travel to Zermatt. Walk around Zermott

Day 4. Buy the Peak2Peak ticket and take the lifts to see Gornergrat ridge, Furi, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise station and back down.

Day 5. Travel to Luzern. Will take Glacier Express for part of the way to Andermatt. (unless people think we should to at least to Chur). If time this day will try to go Burgenstock Hotel for a evening drink

Day 6. Day trip to Pliatus – Bus to Kriens, take gondola to mid-station. ride the tobaggan, then another gondola up to Mt. Pilatus, then back down to Kriens and bus to Luzern

Day. 7 Travel to Zurich – walk around

Day. 8 Zurich – no specific plans yet

Day 9 Fly home from Zurich.

We realize we are only staying 2 nights in each place. We do not mind moving around. We want to do some hiking. We will be there the first two weeks of September so we would like to know what type of weather we should expect and how crowded it will be. Are we after the high travel season.? Any thoughts on this itinerary would be most welcome. Thanks

    Hi MarieD,

Welcome to the forum, thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

This is a reasonably well-planned itinerary and includes sightseeing in various places. I think moving around frequently fits well into that plan.

The weather in September is generally warm and pleasant but it’s too soon to tell if it will be rainy or cloudy the week you are visiting. You can find more information about the seasonal weather here: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

The busiest period is between July and August. I think the first week of September might still be busy in most tourists destinations.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi MarieD!

Please note that you don’t have to activate your Swiss Travel Pass. You can best buy it online, and then there’s nothing else you need to do. Just hop on on your first free travel day :-)! Please see

Stopping at Andermatt on the Glacier Express you will miss four of the six ‘best bits’ of the Glacier Express route, see below:

Travelling West – East, the full Glacier Express route by ‘section’ and the key ‘famous/spectacular’ zones are as follows:

    Zermatt – Brig

    none

    Brig – Andermatt

Superzone 1 : Grengiols viaduct over ravine, then ascent via spiral tunnel

    Andermatt – Disentis

Superzone 2 : Andermatt Naetschen incline: loop the loops up a steep mountainside from Andermatt

Superzone 3: Oberalp lake, Oberalp Pass eastern descent

    Disentis – Chur

Superzone 4: Ruinalta (Swiss Rhine Gorge)

    Chur – St Moritz

Superzone 5: Filisur – Berguen: Landwasser viaduct (the most iconic bridge on Swiss railways); spiral tunnel up from Filisur towards Bergun

Superzone 6: Berguen – Preda : spirals and loops, railway loops back on itself several times so you can see where you are about to go, and then look back to where you have just come from

In fact I mis-typed. stopping short at Andermatt you miss all but one of the 6 ‘top sections’
