We have a Swiss Rail pass and are planning to take the Glacier Express from Zermatt with an overnight in St. Moritz May 15. We also wanted to do the Bernina Express. Original thought was to catch the Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Chur on May 16 and then on to Zurich. However, we were told that the most scenic part of the BEX was between St. Moritz and Tirano. We therefore plan to travel to Tirano in the morning and catch the BEX from there. So the question is how to get to Tirano the most expedient way. Bus? Direct Train? How often do the trains (non BEX or GEX) run between St. Moritz and Tirano? I see that the BEX Train 950 leaves Tirano at 14:25 and arrives Chur 18:20. Is there an earlier option? We have to travel on to meet friends in Zurich from there. If I am reading the schedule correctly, a direct train leaves Chur 18:39 and arrives Zurich 19:53. I would like to get into Zurich earlier as our friend will be picking us up at the station. Should we depart the BEX at an earlier stop to arrive in Zurich earlier inthe afternoon or early evening? If so, which stop? Any help is really appreciated.

    Hello SSSmith,

The BEX between St Moritz and Chur covers exactly the same route the GEX covers.

You could stop you GEX trip at Chur. The next day catch the BEX to Tirano and on to Lugano on BEX bus. From Lugano you can get a fast train to Zurich and be there by 19:51. OK it’s only 2 minutes earlier but look at al the scenery you’ll cover. 😎

The only way to get back to Zurich earlier is to turn round at Tirano and get the next regular train back to Chur and on to Zurich.

If you don’t want to break the GEX at Chur then you can catch a BEX from St Moritz to Tirano departing 9:39 arriving 12:00. Then a regular train back to Zurich via Chur.

You can also get a regular train to Pontresina and join the Chur to Tirano BEX there.

Which ever leg of the BEX you take remember you need to make reservations. BEX timetable is here http://www.rhb.ch/en/panorami c-trains/bernina-express#info. Reservation on the regular train are not required.
